GOLFERS WILL “POWERPLAY” AT North Shore Golf Club
Golf’s answer to Twenty20 cricket arrives in Skegness
PowerPlay Golf, described by many as golf’s version of Twenty20 cricket, is coming to the North Shore Golf Club on Friday 23rd September.
Played over 9 holes instead of the normal 18, PowerPlay Golf is an exciting, high-pressure form of the sport which gives golfers two flags to aim at on every green.
They score extra points if they ‘PowerPlay’ to the Black Flag, which is in an extra-hard position – often close to hazards such as bunkers or lakes.
Golfers around the world have praised it for being a more attacking format of the classic game, in a faster timescale well suited to modern life.
Superstars such as Gary Player, Ian Poulter and John Daly recently played in the first PowerPlay Golf TV event on May 30th, at Ryder Cup venue Celtic Manor, with 9 further TV events scheduled by the end of 2012 in places such as China and the USA.
Car giants Saab sponsor the format, and a Saab World PowerPlay Golf Championship for amateur golfers offers the chance to travel to exotic places to compete against other two-flag devotees.
Golf clubs in over 40 countries now host PowerPlay Golf events, but the format was first played in the United Kingdom in early 2007.
Over thirty million golfers worldwide are predicted to play PowerPlay Golf by the end of the decade, with national championships featuring big prizes for club golfers planned in many countries, alongside a growing number of Tour-style TV events.
North Shore Golf Club is setting up the course for PowerPlay Golf.
General Manager Mark McGrath said: “We’re looking forward to holding PowerPlay Golf events here. It takes half the time of a normal game of golf, it’s simple and exciting to play, our members and visitors will love it, and it has that vital ‘X-Factor’. We’re proud to be in at the start of something that – we believe – will energise golf in the same way that Twenty20 has for cricket!”
